REVIEW: Donkey Kong Country Returns

Donkey Kong: a name that, for some, is synonymous with video games. A name that has been immortalized forever in video game history. Donkey Kong has grown and matured with us over the years. From the original arcade Donkey Kong, up through the SNES Donkey Kong Country games, the widely overlooked Donkey Kong 64, and even the Gamecube Donkey Kong Jungle Beat games, the great ape has been evolving with us over the decades, and his newest swing into action: Donkey Kong Country Returns on the Nintendo Wii, is no exception...

Donkey Kong Country Returns is a throwback to the Donkey Kong Country games from the Super Nintendo, which are arguably his best gaming moments, until now, that is. Developed by Texas based Retro Studios, Donkey Kong Country Returns stays true to the formula that RARE set the standard with back in the day, all the while somehow managing to blow it clean out of the water. From the lush environments and gorgeous backgrounds, to nostalgia inducing music and intuitive controls, it's all here.

Never before has Donkey Kong's world been so alive and engrossing. The moment you bust out of the great ape's hut you are thrown deep into the action, and it doesn't falter even after the credits roll. Donkey Kong Country Returns isn't lacking, in anything. The world environments are distinct, with none of them feeling like a rehash of those that came before it. Just when you think you've seen it all, the game throws another surprise your way and you find yourself with your jaw on the floor in awe yet again.

Not only does Donkey Kong Country Returns raise the bar for forthcoming Donkey Kong Country games Nintendo might have in store for us in the future, it also sets the new standard for all platforming games in general. I believe it's one of the greatest platformers in recent times, if not ever. Even if you've never played a Donkey Kong game before, I urge anyone that is a fan of platforming games to at least take this great ape's newest adventure out for a quick swing. Odds are you'll soon discover that (I know you've been waiting for this), it's on like Donkey Kong.
