Miyamoto on goals with the Wii U...
"We tried to imagine what could make it more attractive and desirable for players, and how we could take them further. It is truly out of this reflection by asking very specific questions. An important starting point was the availability. How to make the game available all the time and instantly, regardless of the use made of television. Do not wait a moment and do not interrupt when someone wants to watch a TV program, drag the screen of the "joystick" ("controller") to the TV in the same stream without interruption. Obviously, we have also advanced thinking at every step, what new types of games it could lead."
On stepping away from hardware development to let the younger devs in...
"For the GameCube and Wii I was really deeply involved from the start and the design of the structure and development processes. For U Wii, I would say it represents the beginning of a transition with younger generations of Nintendo engineers who have been more involved in the development of the project. I am always very present and engaged myself, but less directly. It's as if I had stepped aside: I followed step by step work and gave them advice. "
On 3DS sales...
"Obviously, we can consider that the sales curve could be better, especially when compared to those of our previous hardware, and we were hoping to better themselves. But we must take into account the overall context of the industry during that period, and a cooling global sales of hardware. I also think that we have unfortunately not been able to present from the start a fairly comprehensive range of games. But this is no longer the case: new online features and all of a series of highly anticipated games will be there for the summer. The content that our players expect happens, do not worry.
On the state of the game industry...
"I think our industry is too focused on the Japanese market, and too dependent on specific niches in it. The current developers lack the experience of global audience, as if our energy and talent, we do not, however, miss, were too focused on ourselves. It is difficult to make a profit under these conditions. At Nintendo, as a member of this community, we are currently considering how to help some of our partners in the Japanese industry to mature their ideas and take them to wider audiences."
On creating new characters/series for Wii U...
"It was my goal with the Pikmin, I started to develop for the GameCube and there will also a Pikmin Wii U I'm working on too. But I agree: do not always do it again. From this point of view, the U Wii looks good: it is the ideal system to accommodate new types of games and new characters. "
