Does the Wii U only support one new controller?

Straight from Nintendo's Wii U press release...

The player using the new controller can have a different experience than those looking at the TV. This will offer a wide variety of competitive and cooperative opportunities.

Each Wii U console will be partnered with a new controller and can also use up to four additional Wii Remote™ or Wii Remote Plus controllers.

I know there have been some rumors going around that Wii U can only use one of the tablet controllers at a time, while there are other rumors saying that Nintendo is working on running multiple controllers at once. Obviously it would be a huge loss if you could only use one at a time, but considering how taxing it is on the hardware to stream to the controller, it makes sense. You would think it would also depend on how graphically intensive the games are.

I could understand not being able to stream a Battlefield 3 type game, but I can't see why it wouldn't be able to stream New Super Mario Bros. to multiple controllers. I mean, sure, you could use the TV as a screen for player 1, and the controller screen for player 2, but it'd be neat to keep everyone on screen above ground, and have it switch to the controller screen when going underground, not unlike 4 swords did with the GBA's. I guess time will tell...
